That's astounding value, ofca!!!!!

I have the CD which I think is of the same performance. I learnt that piece from Abbado's first recording with the Chicago Symphony. No one does it better - especially the slow movement... He saves an extra gear in the intensity box for the final climax, so that suddenly it's as if the music suddenly catches fire on a particular modulation to the major. One of the ultimate frisson moments in music.

Re Berlin: I may crack this weekend, but I had persuaded myself that I should not be so profligate (mindful of Amateur's admonition!). However thinking about it again, I'm not so sure.

Plus I've just finished listening to the French radio "Tribune de Critiques" on Mahler 4 - their runaway winner is the Abbado / Lucerne version of that piece on DVD, a performance which the presenter said had him in 'frequent tears' while preparing the programme...

Beware! Though the performance is undoubtedly superb, the manufacture of at least the Blu-ray versions of these discs is highly suspect. The customer reviews on amazon.co.uk. It might be worth waiting until the audio problems get sorted.

There's that site on ebay that sells dvds blu-rays etc for very good value for money prices, from Honk Kong. I have the DVD for JSB's Brandenburgs with Orchestra Mozart and Abbado. What playing there!

Thanks Petrush. I damn nearly cracked and bought a ticket this morning - some top seats have become available, stalls centre 7th row, my ideal... But of course they are top price. Even with BA Miles to use up, and an old friend to stay with, I've decided not to do it. I have an expensive June and July coming up.

I thought it was just Blu-ray release of the 2nd Symphony that suffered from constricted sound and that this has been addressed with a re-release. Certainly this review suggests that the sound on all the Symphonies, including the improved 2nd Symphony, is very good:

There are various options for live listening on the right of the page there. The mp3 is at 128kbps. I have opted for the ogg, which is described by them as high quality. It's getting towards the end of the Adagio from the 10th now (I have only just joined it). Total Recorder is doing the honours, saving to FLAC. For tonight's Evening Concert on Radio 3 I will have to make do with the 192kbps aac on demand version when it turns up later tonight.
