    Stephen Hough at the Barbican

    Stephen Hough piano

    Schubert piano sonata D784
    Franck Prelude Chorale and Fugue
Hough Piano Sonata III ( premiere )
Liszt Valses oubliees Nos 1 and 2
    Liszt Transcendental Etudes No 11

I was at this concert last night and would encourage people to listen to the radio 3 broadcast tomorrow evening ( Thursday 29th ) And to stay for the encores ! I realise the programme may not appeal to all but it was much less austere than might appear at first sight.

With works by Schubert, Franck and Lizst, and the premiere of his own third sonata, the pianist took his audience on a spiritual journey from darkness to light

Most grateful for the reminder! I just caught the broadcast. Stephen Hough was masterful, with powerful technique and a big emotional range. I greatly enjoyed this, particularly the Schubert, the Liszt, and the Third Sonata, which reminded me of Tippett's Second Sonata played by Paul Crossley, and of the Ligeti Piano Concerto, all three pieces having unexpected emergent consonance, and being much easier to listen to than any technical description would have you believe!

I sent him a tweet congratulating him on his new work and the concert as a whole and he graciously replied!

I thought his new sonata was very interesting and I look forward to hearing it again on the iplayer.

It turned out to be a very compelling programme indeed.
