Have you got all 5 CDs of Azzolini's cycle of bassoon concertos on Naive?

Yes that made me flinch - the first time I made a special journey to London for a concert in my teens with a schoolmate was in the late ‘70s to a Muti/Philharmonia concert at the RFH… heaven knows what the programme was, but the charismatic swagger of the man, the attitude & whirling black curtains of hair (such a contrast with the white-haired old men on the covers of my parents’ LPs!) made a great impression.

At last, with holiday guests departed, I’ve caught up with my TV recording - he’s still got it, the decades and bags under the eyes notwithstanding.

What a Tritsch-Tratsch-Polka … that’s the performance that grabbed me at first hearing
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
        Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I’ve listened a few times to different bits of the DG recording (Qobuz) and what a pleasure it is - mercifully free of the Pontifications of Petroc… and also free of any trace of applause.

Not sure how I feel about the latter - is this usual for the NYD concert album releases?

Surely this year’s Muti is a Sony recording not DG?

Yes Sony, and now available on Qobuz in 24bt/96k

Listen to the release Neujahrskonzert 2025 / New Year's Concert 2025 / Concert du Nouvel An 2025 by Riccardo Muti on Qobuz https://open.qobuz.com/album/yd38xfubndx8b

On the question of the applause, this must be the first NYDC recording that doesn't retain it. An odd decision because the recording is surely meant to be a souvenir of the event as much as for the music itself so all atmosphere will be drained out of it. A separate tracking alternative would have been better.

I will therefore swerve the CD and instead buy the Blu-ray disc when it comes out.

Muti’s earlier Sony recording of course did not contain any applause as it was recorded in lockdown. No chance you have been listening to that one ?

That was something of a special case. You may recall that there was some applause at that concert because an arrangement had been put in place for people to log in and applaud remotely via a bank of computer screens in the hall.

I bought the DVD and the CD.

Muti’s return to the Philharmonia with the Verdi Requiem bound to be a hot ticket.

Quite right about Sony, though 👍🏻

I finally got around to listening to part of the concert on our public television website. Muti really does have a flare for this music

The 2021 'lockdown' concert is certainly devoid of audience but on the DVD there are one or two moments where the orchestra and conductor stand to face the empty hall and there's some, presumably dubbed-in, applause. It's ever so slightly weird, imo!

See my post 114 which explains what was done. Anyone, anywhere could log in via the VPO (or it might have been the ORF) website and be part of an 'applauding audience' via a constantly changing bank of screens in the hall. It was live and not dubbed in but, yes, it did sound weird!

Oops, apologies, Petrushka, I didn't spot your earlier post. Thanks for explaining the applause thing - yes, still weird!
