The fiddle playing in this Lagoon waltz is just exquisite. Not using much vibrato either by the look of the close ups on TV.

That was a masterclass in how to conduct a waltz with pulse and elasticity of phrasing . Did the play the main theme the same way twice ? And the pianissimo at the end ..

The quality of the strings is unparalleled. And such beautiful instruments.

          Happy New Year all!

Very enjoyable part one. I try quite hard not to look
up the programme in advance. One or two clues above and I feel part two could be something special.

You can add the bassoon section to that on the evidence of this bonkers Fledermaus arrangement .

Mrs. PG plays the bassoon and we have a few CDs of crazy arrangements for multiple bassoon ensembles of various works including the Goldberg Variations.

A very expressive instrument as the VPO section demonstrated.

Only criticism so far: Muti should be in morning dress and could afford to crack a smile!

Would the BBC had a red button option to save us from Trelawny's pompous haranguing.

Also using a score, which is cheating…

…and he was incorrect in initially telling us that Muti had been music director of the LPO instead of the Philharmonia. He slipped in an unacknowledged correction later on.

Some of the music he may have never conducted before and the orchestra may also be unfamiliar with it . There’s so much precision involved in these pieces I reckon a score is essential - but I bet a few conductors try and busk it. He doesn’t look very happy though …heavy night ?
Anyway he’s conducting it very well.
