They probably think that will please the intended/expected audience better.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

I hadn’t realised the whole shooting match had happened nearly a month ago…

      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I nearly posted a message saying
Don't we already know the winner?
but then wondered if I was living in a time warp.

No spoiler alerts if we do, please.

Filmed (dunno when or who won) at Bristol Beacon, apparently. The scheduling of the radio and TV broadcasts is perplexing (to out it mildly).

Back in 1978, Stephen Hough played Mozart in the first ever Young Musician Final - K449, if I remember rightly.

He won the piano section, but the overall winner was trombonist Michael Hext. The host was Humphrey Burton.

Indeed. And the other finalists were Michael Collins, who hasn't had a bad career, to say the least, and Caroline Dale who is still playing, although not primarily as a classical cellist.

Yes: two Rach PC 2s and the Tchaikovsky VC maybe not ideal.
And I've just heard the word ICONIC!!

That first Rach 2 was really very good ( I’m 30 mins behind ) aided by some superlative orchestral playing. Left hand very prominent…

                          Dear God....

                          How nervous will they be?
What an inane question to ask!

So far rather disappointing - the first pianist played unsurprisingly well but I was not moved . I am afraid the same applies to the young violinist whose tone seemed rather less ingratiating as a soloist with orchestra than with piano.

Yes I agree . I think his intonation and tone was far from “world class ..” The hype from the judges was excruciating but they made the right decision.
Ryan’s Rach 2 had more poetry but let’s be fair for a 16 year old to put in that first performance was extraordinary.

There seems to have been a change of heart or a rethink somewhere in the BBC, because the tv guide in the iWeekend for BBC2 tonight says:
6.30 BBC Young Musician 2024 - Highlights of the grand final
8.00 Scotland: The New Wild - Life In The Lowlands
