Definitely less than average because they have to go up steps to be seen - whereas violinists, who are taller, can just stand on the level - and pianists, who are taller still, can even sit and be seen

It's a "negative social stereotype".

The sort of thing that is unacceptable when applied to other groups of people.

Conductors do have to be quite tall. Otherwise the lightning can't reach them.
