    Paul Lewis: Schubert

At the Gilmore Festival in Kalamazoo, Mi, we attended a recital featuring D .840,845, and 664. I have always liked these works without loving them but this recital was excellent and will make me seek them out more. Lewis seemed to scale his dynamics down on the Steinway but cut loose at strategic moments, and gave the music its drama and lyricism.

Olga Kern played last night in a program of non stop barn burners. Beethoven Salieri Variations , Schumann Carnaval, Gershwin 3Preludes, Earl Wild Transcription-Fantasy on Fascinating Rhythm, then lots of Rachmaninov including the Corelli Variations, his arrangement of Mussorgsky Hopak and Rimsky Flight of the Bumblebee.
The Virtuosity was staggering. It was perhaps to much of a good thing, but criticizing for that reason would be beside the point
