The mix of music was very much what I would expect from the "real" FNIMN and with one exception the performance/performers were very much up to standard. Katie D was annoying as presenter/MC but that I expected, but the real low point was Wynne Evans - mute switch employed each time for his appearances.
Go Compère for Katie & Wynne?

I think Katie set out to be her usual self-aware, glamorous and entertaining hostess self and succeeded, whereas poor Wynne simply had a bad night. Unfortunately for him, his rendition of 'Nessun Dorma' probably served only to remind people that they'd heard it sung much better by people like Pavarotti.

As I was enjoying the rest I decided to stick with the mute approach - at least on TV it was easy to time the unmute moment.

I'm afraid the sight of him singing his heart out without apparently making a sound would have reduced me to giggles.

Both would need to don artificial corkscrew mustaches.

I found it rather sad - all that effort for no good outcome - so just kept an eye out at a distance for the moment to deploy the mute button to return to right notes in the right places.

There are so many good British tenors around at the moment. What about the superb Alessandro Fisher? - so many popular John McCormack repertoire songs he could have done. Or Freddie De Tomasso - he can nail both Nessun Dorma and Be My Love.

I agree. Could do without KD, and the singer is too wobbly and approximate for my liking, but overall I'm glad I gave it another chance. Let's hope this isn't a one-off?

Indeed! Ideal Friday-night fare for this listener.

Fair enought, but the point remains: what is the justification for putting it on Radio3 and not leaving it on Radio 2?

Presumably some focus group or programme planner doesn't believe it would appeal to what is now officially deemed to be Radio 2's existing and target audiences.

In one respect none, but in another quite a lot - it is short pieces with presenter input, which is the current preferred format for R3.
Whether that is sufficient is a whole other, and much bigger, argument about what R3 is actually for.

Exactly. The question asked was about the justification, rather than R3's preference or anything else.

It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.
