Easter week has just about the best music all year on R3 . Religious works that even they don’t dare segment , no endlessly repeated carols , and no Easter related Broadway stuff. Last nights Missa Solemnis teed things up nicely , German Requiem tonight , Fille Du Regiment and 90 mins of NGA artists tomorrow , and some intriguing stuff on Sunday. As Wizzard almost put it ‘I Wish It Could Be Easter Everyday .’

Even a complete Parsifal was, more or less, a permanent fixture on Radio 3 each Easter......but that was then, this is now!

Perhaps they should have had Camelot on tonight, as Noel Coward declared Parsifal 'A little like Camelot without the jokes'!

There's a St Mathew Passion this afternoon to add to that list...

yes I’d forgotten that.Vanished like the Knights of Old along with that year’s Bayreuth Ring Cycle in the run up to Christmas. A cultural disgrace of course …..

The Bayreuth Ring was broadcast on European stations, and you're right it's a disgrace the BBC no longer take it...I listened on YLE - Ok singing overall, but from the stills I've seen, glad I didn't have to watch it! Apparently it was the first year when there were empty seats for some of the perfs!

Just been informed by Skellers that he is presenting the Brahms live at King’s tonight with the BBC Concert Orchestra. Obviously I’m hoping for a dipped Brahms theme at the beginning and Ian coming in with the immortal words “Friday Night Is Requiem Night.”

so far this broadcast wins an award for the most intelligent intro in a long time on R3 . Good presenter this new chap.

On a Positive note I x Missa Solemnis , 1x German Requiem and 1 x St Matthew Passion in 24 hours is hardly dumbing down …

The John was played (Proms 2024) during TTN too.

I'll launch threads for both today's offerings (in The Choir); probably a bit late now for last night's Missa Solemnis.

The choral singing in the Missa Solemnis was outstanding and it appears we have a newish forum member Neil who was singing in the chorus.

I spotted that, and meant to say welcome.

Sad to say, the Missa Solemnis (first heard at a Three Choirs Festival concert in Worcester in 1968) leaves me completely unmoved, though I appreciate that for others it's sans pareil.
                          Just not my period?

Oops.....provably should have launched in Performance instead.
Maybe a more qualified host can move them?
I'd have to copy and then delete the originalsI think.

... you are not alone - "leaves me completely unmoved" is my experience - and elsewhere Beethoven is among the most important of composers for me

Maybe one needs to hear it in a 'great' (whatever that means) performance. It didn't mean much to me until I heard Beecham and Toscanini (respectively) conduct it. Now I find it hard to disagree with those wo call it 'the greatest (whatever that means) piece of music ever written. '
