But I'm not being simply allowed to have different tastes, many do. I am for some reason being told here that I should be guilty and ashamed, and that I am pathetic, for having those tastes.

It isn't just loathing of the music (if you really must), but, if words mean anything, something that verges on contempt directed personally at anyone who does not share that loathing.

Then again, the majority of people that I encounter regard Radio 3 as mostly noise, and even those that don't would see much of this forum as pretentious tripe. I do try not to share these views. Best I keep away.

I'm quite amused by 'pretentious tripe'. Definitely nouvelle cuisine and very probably drizzled with something.

Where do you get this idea from? "Guilty" was first raised by LMP in #21, with no reference to you; "ashamed" was used by vinteuil in reference to Alpie's response to LMP; and "pathetic" was used by myself (who was the first respondent to the OP, in which I made my enthusiasm for G&S clear) in response to Alpie's reposte to vinteuil. None of this was "directed" at you at all.

Indeed I can only echo these sentiments.

I've admitted I got it all wrong. Sorry.

                Not all of it

G&S is marginally better than DoG

(but there again, trapping your fingers in the hinge of a door is better than dropping a pile of bricks on your foot)

Have you ever read any of Gilbert's libretti? It's Private Eye material - satirical stuff; highly anti-establishment. Take HMS Pinafore: if that came out today the press would go ballistic about anything which sent up "our boys" like that. Similarly, read the words from the major general patter song from Pirates.

                      Indeed it is
though for me (and this is only my view and not at all 'objective') it's a bit like The Goon Show in that I can understand how people find it hilarious (including my son) but it doesn't travel well to my ears.

How about swapping Gilbert's libretti for Newman's?

thus cannibalising two flawed works to create one excellent one?

On the librettos: I was once prompter for Princess Ida and was amazed on reading Tennyson's The Princess to see how close the 'story' was to Ida. Gilbert obviously thought Tennyson's poem lent itself to his brand of satire/parody - and it did, abundantly. Not always clear exactly what he's making fun of …

Chiefly, women's education - not one of his finer ideas (but Gama's a great role).

I like G&S! Really. Unashamed, not guilty...

I find I am in rather good company - Stravinsky and Carlos Kleiber to name but two. Let the snobs put that in their pipe and smoke it!
