    vinteuil's joshing aside - have there been any "snobbish" comments? Does genuine dislike indicate "snobbishness"?

          I, for one, am happy to be called a snob and a G&S lover!

              He was told by his father that it was the ultimate challenge in conducting - not the New Year's concerts themselves, but Strauss.

              Yes, light music! Yikes, how ghastly. Come away my dears, there's nothing to see here...Nurse, nurse, the pills...

              But seriously, one wouldn't claim quite that of G&S but CK remained keen to conduct the Mikado, mentioning this to Peter Jonas when he was in charge at ENO.

              Would love to have seen that if it had happened. Would the snobs have turned up because it was Carlos, or stayed away because it was G&S...Hmmm.

              Why did he like it? Well, whisper it quietly... 'cos he had a sense of humour! Fancy.

                ... o, I don't think you need worry - the venn diagrams of snobs and those who enjoy Gilbert and Sullivan overlap: - however -

                some snobs may like G & S;
                many snobs can't abide G or S;
                many G & S lovers are not snobs;
                many are not snobs and cannot abide G or S.

                    Sounds like the mile high club on Doyley's Cart.

                    Actually I like S but not G!

                      Not really....

                      I can tire of J. & J.S. as swiftly as anyone - but not when it's done like that. I love the giggle at the end.

                      That's not a New Year concert; but this rehearsal for one is interesting

                      sorry for the quality, but carlos-fans will not mind... what a musician and human being...enjoy.... :)https://mepro-music.com/

                      - how complicated can it be to get the right kind of cymbal crash in the right place... ?!
                      "...the isle is full of noises,
                      Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
                      Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

                          Possibly my least favourite G & S operetta is The Mikado. I just find Sullivan's music to be a bit too predictable, though it's probably Gilbert' finest.
                          I prefer Iolanthe, Yeoman, Pirates, Pinafore, Ruddigore and Trial by Jury.

                            This was in Japan...where he was adored.

                            Clearly not when he was doing deep research in to The Mikado!

                              Gilbert and Sullivan used to have an unfortunate place in English culture - camp for straights and culture for philistines. "I don't like opera, but I like Gilbert and Sullivan."

                              The whole shebang is parodic through and through. Love it or loathe it. (I love it now and again.)
