YouTube Gerontius, 1968, Pears, Baker, JSQ, Boult.

I'm not sure whether this is the right place to post this new discovery, a fantastic filmed performance from Canterbury Cathedral which I remember seeing on television at the time. Pears singing Gerontius from memory and with complete conviction. Interesting for me to see Boult, a conductor not admired by either Pears or Britten, but a sort of legend all the same.

I would post a link if I had mastered the art of doing them on an iPad. A search on YouTube will easily find it.

It's a fine performance, and the one that inspired Britten to record it. But I do wish we were given more of the performers and (very many) less stained glass windows and gargoyles.

I have a 1st gen iPad, so my views may be different, but I find it a real pain trying to pick up YouTube links on the iPad. It can be done by holding one's finger down on the link, and sometimes a menu pops up with just two items in. The bottom one is Copy, which copies the link. Sometimes a menu with four items pops up - and again there's a Copy - but it doesn't work properly and goes via Google (on mine, anyway). The problem is that often instead of getting the link copied the iPad actually then opens up the YouTube app. On my iPad there is a further problem, as the YouTube app appears to be an old one which is not supported any more.

If you are really keen to get a link, it can be done by following the YouTube link, then using Share, and emailing it to yourself. Overall I find it a real pain on iPads, and it's definitely much easier using a laptop.

The only time when I'd really need to use the iPad and be "desperate" to share a link would be if I were actually out and about, and really felt the need to communicate, otherwise I'd probably email myself a reminder and do it when I got home.

Oh, dear! I really cannot get what Boult does with this score (neither here nor in his studio recording)! Superb singing (and how marvellous to be reminded what a great singer JSQ was) - but how I wish it was Barbirolli in charge of these forces.

I remember seeing this - my first experience of Gerontius. I made a recording from the inards of the TV of the sound track [black and white TV!!, colour has not got started yet in 1968] but it got lost in a house move somewhere. Would be good to hear it again. A bit reverberant IIRC.

Well, it is a cathedral! The film is in colour, but I suppose most of us would have seen it in black and and white even so. I don't think we had a colour television until the early 70s. In fact, now I come to think of it, I must have been staying with my parents when I saw this programme, because in 1968 I didn't have a TV at all.

If your iPad is newer than mine I would expect it to be easier (much?) - though I can't confirm that it will be. I'm waiting for the next generation model to come out and then I may retire mine, or use it for other purposes.

I suspect that my technique of holding a finger for a few seconds over the link might actually work - to put the link on the clipboard, then in the R3 post area pressing down with a finger for a second or two to get the paste pop up, and to paste the link into the input area. If the link shown is clearly a YouTube one then it's probably worked, but if it's a very long one via a search engin, such as Google, then maybe it hasn't!

I agree with Mary that it may be easier with a laptop, but it really should work with newish iPads. I can sometimes achieve work arounds which are similar to yours, but sometimes the effort is just too much.

Have you heard the various lengthy extracts from live performances at Hereford and the RAH, conducted by the old boy? (At least they provide proof that Britten was being wilful when he prolonged the bass drum rolls across the two silent bars in the prelude.)
