Previn LSO Rachmaninov. 10 June 2015

London Symphony Orchestra - Previn, Rachmaninov
    Radio 3 Live in Concert

    Live from the Barbican Hall
    Presented by Petroc Trelawny

Andre Previn returns to the LSO as conductor and composer. Anne-Sophie Mutter performs the violin concerto for which she is the dedicatee, and this is paired with Rachmaninov's richly melodic second symphony.

    Previn: Violin Concerto 'Anne Sophie'

    8.10pm:
Interval - interval music from disc

    8.30pm:
    Rachmaninov: Symphony No 2

    Anne-Sophie Mutter (violin)
    London Symphony Orchestra
    conductor André Previn

Composer, conductor, and pianist extraordinaire, André Previn is a hugely versatile musician. He returns to the LSO, where he was Principal Conductor for over a decade, to partner his former wife, the German violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter, in a concerto written for her in the early years of their artistic and personal collaboration.
Rachmaninov's opulently lyrical Second Symphony completes the programme.

I am very glad that the Beeb will broadcast this concert.

Crumbs... one of the great constants of my musical life, ever since our head of music played a track from the classic EMI LSO/Previn No 2 during 'O'-level music classes (the recording was only a few years old then! ). Amazing that one can still go and hear the same combination all these years later.

Surprising too - I went to a Previn concert years ago at the Barbican... (the then Mrs P was playing the Korngold concerto I think... actually I've found it, it was one of his 75th birthday concerts, the Korngold with ... another great constant, Walton 1, in June 2005)..

... anyway, the point is that it was a bitter-sweet occasion because Previn looked so thin and frail that I was privately convinced that it couldn't be long before there was a sad announcement.

Hurrah for Mister Preview that he's still waving his stick 10 years later! Very gratifying to be proved wrong sometimes...!

So they're bringing Jack Brymer back, are they?

      If only...

(Did hear him live once though, in 1973 playing the Mozart concerto with the legendary Henley Symphony Orch...)
I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

I'd rather hear Jack Brymer than the former Mrs. P....

I was lucky enough to hear Previn and the LSO in their heyday playing the Rachmaninov 2 and, yes, it was Jack Brymer too!

November 3 1977 in Manchester and I met Previn afterwards.

How is he healthwise these days? I understood he was very frail but like Caliban says that must be about 10 years ago.

This is great news. I wonder how Previn's interpretation of the Rach 2 will be like, now? Made me happy.

When I saw the concert billed I had exactly the same thought - will the slow movement be slower - AP's contribution to music over 60+ years has been unrivalled.

Just for once an unmissable BBC live concert. I'm staying in that night!

I do envy London concert goers in the 1970's with not only Previn but Haitink, Boulez, Dorati and Muti as principal conductors of the London orchestras.

Terrific concert on R3 tonight. All the old Previn magic was there in the Rachmaninov, just as good as in his celebrated recording.

Any forumites in the hall this evening? How's Previn looking? Was he sitting or standing? Can't imagine him at 86 somehow!

I was sorely tempted but decided I couldn't cancel a dinner that was booked... which the other parties (coming from abroad) then cancelled early afternoon ... and I'd forgotten what was happening about 1km east of the office

I shall make a point of listening to the symphony!

Really hope someone pops up having been there this evening

                            Fantastic evening at the Barbican.

Lost for words at the end of the Rach. AP has to be helped to the podium now and conducts sat down in a modified office chair. However, the magic is clearly still there. The LSO played out of their skins for him.

Standing ovation at the end justified by the performance, not just the love in the room!

Wonderful to hear though I'm starting to get sore from kicking myself...

Just listened to the first movement of the Rachmaninov before bed - stunning performance, playing, transmission

                              Good old André
