I've had my eye on Sunwook Kim since his Leeds-winning Brahms PC 1 (my recorded copy of which on DVD is one of my references for that piece).

He's absolutely the real deal.

Two more chances to hear the programme (Bristol and Portsmouth I think) this week - anyone in range should jump at it..... teamsaint? french frank?

towards the end of the interval while Handley was speaking we heard more applause and he told us that the audience had just been told that Karabits's contract had been extended (or is now a 'rolling-contract' - I'm not up with the terminology) - he got a big cheer on his return

He seems to be doing rather well by all counts and I am glad that a regional orchestra such as this is able to obtain the services of a conductor of this calibre.

THanks for the heads up, Cals.Unfortunately, I can't make the Portsmouth concert. ( and GRRRRRR..because I also can't make that interesting concert at Wiltshire music centre on Friday, or Graham Parker at Salisbury City Hall this weekend. I hope that the Mahler 10 makes up for it on election night.)

The orchestra and soloist seemed to stick together like glue: no mean feat, I should imagine. Nice to hear the "ossia" cadenza.

Yes - orchestra and conductor were terrific I thought. I loved the way Karabits used the brass in the finale, gilded walls of sound as a backdrop for the detail. Perfectly paced, trumpet-topped climax too

An extraordinary and magical Rachmaninov 3 from Sunwook Kim tonight with the Halle/Elder . All the power in the world but so musical and so much poetry amongst the fireworks and the Halle shone too - the strings in particular I bet Barbirolli would have loved conducting this 2015 Halle

Much the best Rachmaninov 3 I have heard live- if you are in Manchester, Blackburn or Nottingham this week he is playing it - do not miss it .

Congratulations Caliban, you kept that quiet. Helene Grimaud will be trembling when she hears that. But will probably think she's got the edge on CD front cover good looks.
