    Concert context

Many of the concerts broadcast on TTN and in other slots might make brief mention of the original occasion, but often very little is said about the circumstances of the concert. It can be quite rewarding to trawl the internet for further information.

So for example, the April 1 TTN opened with the Emerson Quartet playing Mendelssohn, Schubert and Beethoven. It was said that this was from the Royal Castle in Warsaw in April last year. Some little research revealed the information below (courtesy of Google Translate). This was from the web site of Polish Channel 2, which broadcast the concert on 25 April 2014.

An excellent concert! 2 days left to listen. I find it very strange that TTN broadcast the Beethoven last, whereas it was actually first. I had thought that TTN didn’t mess around with concerts in the way that R3 does. But we should at least be grateful for getting the complete concert.

The concert of the famous Emerson String Quartet on the eighteenth Easter Festival of Ludwig van Beethoven was the first opportunity to see this team in Poland. The audience gathered in the Great Hall of the Royal Castle heard three quartets in different ways relating to the topic of death.

    - Prepared String Quartet in F minor, Op. 80 Felix Mendelssohn. This is the last of his quartets written shortly after the death of his sister, and shortly before his own - told Lawrence Dutton. - The Schubert quartet Death and the Maiden is woven into the song of the same title.

Warsaw concert program String Quartet Emerson String Quartet completed in F major, Op. 59 No. 1 by Ludwig van Beethoven.

Welcome to the retransmission of the performance. The evening will take Marek Zwyrzykowski.

    Program:

VII Ludwig van Beethoven String Quartet in F major, Op. 59 No. 1,

Felix Mendelssohn String Quartet in F minor, Op. 80

Franz Schubert String Quartet in D minor, "Death and the Maiden" (D. 810)

Wyk. Emerson String Quartet (Eugene Drucker - and violin, Philip Setzer - second violin, Lawrence Dutton - viola, Paul Watkins - cello)

(Warsaw Royal Castle Grand Hall, 4/13/2014)

April 25 (Friday), hours. 19.30-22.00, the introduction of the chair. 19.00

I think TTN is the best thing on R3. I have it on replay while working during the day. And presumably v cheap to produce as it's archive from R3 and progs from other countries the Beeb I assume has reciprocals with. Marvellous.

I am still trying to figure a way to record it so that I can play it while I am in the car.

Most certainly one of the best things. But EMS and H&N are IMVHO often in the same league.
the programming of A on 3 is not bad either, though sometimes as war-horse-orientated as the evening concerts too often are.

How very dare you suggest that I would be such a saddo as to buy a Volvo. MrGG owns a Volvo.

Even my flimsy grasp of the basics of logic show that this means that you think GG is a saddo.

Actually, I think he must be pretty smart, being wise enough to keep out of the David Matthews thread

Plus he knows OMD and Cabaret Voltaire.......

Actuallu, if GG was given the Volvo, that lets you off the hook.

It isn't owning a Volvo that's the issue. It's the drivers who are often such a nightmare.

But seriously - If you can download TTN to an mp3 player, many modern cars have a connection. (Some have dumped the CD player to make room for it. )

they put the CD player in mine in the glove box. Not just mine, but all cars of the same make and model !!

I need to get it sorted. I don't know how to record off a PC though.

I read stuff about it on the net, and get bored/confused, and put on a CD instead.

Reading that David Matthews thread makes my brain hurt.

                            Of course it is.

I quite liked it, but wasn't as impressed as ah and JLW had led me to expect. That's allowed, too!

Googling the words "get", "iplayer" and the sort of operating system you use (OSX, Linux or Windows) will lead you to even better results than Total Recorder can offer, and without having to pay. The learning curve is not too bad and there is an associated forum with lots of helpful contributors.
