Brahms: Symphony no. 3; CSO/Edo De Waart

Just returned from seeing a stellar Brahms 3. This wa a "Beyond The Score" Concert; the first half is devoted to a multimedia presentation on the work, with Conductor and Orchestra on stage playing bits of the work for illustrative purposes, followed by an Intermission and then the full work itself.
I had not seen de Waart conduct since I was in College, when he led a touring Nethalands Orchestra (Rotterdam?). Interestingly, he used a baton for the outer movements but his hands for the inner two. THe performance had just the right juxtapositions of energy, melancholy, tenderness and fire. Very satisfying.

P.S I don't know how to correct the typo (Brahsms) on the heading--can one of the moderators help?

    Hope that helps.

The concert format sounds a step above the pre-concert talks found elsewhere.

      Off topic alert!

I always thought it a shame that the symbol (hashtag) originally used by Richard for No [3] in his post never caught on in UK; and that it has been hijacked by Twitter for topics.

(Interestingly, my Mac doesn't offer one on the keyboard.)

Back on topic: Richard's concert/presentation sounds fascinating. If we had more of this on R3, perhaps it would be more educative and inviting than the dumbing-down that goes on.

If you really want one, alt and 3 held down together will provide it!

          Thanks, Doll .

I knew it would be in there somewhere - but was struck that it's not actually on the keyboard, given that # is a common US abbreviation for 'number'.

The Chicago Symphony offers 3 "Beyond The Score" Presentations a year. The Director of this is a Brit--Gerald McBurney-and he does the presentations from the stage with the Orchestra. McBurney also gives pre concert lectures here. My wife and I generally attend one of these a year, although we enjoy them so much we may try to increase that...More can be found, including some excerpts of past presentations, on the cso.org site.
The one that really stood out was a few years ago on Dvorak's New World. I had no idea that Dvorak was as obsessed with Longfellow's Hiawatha...The presentation included a recital team of a Singer singing spirituals that were similar to some ofthe themes from the Symphony. Another outstanding one was Shostakovich Fourth Symphony. I wasn't there for the event, but a complete DVD was included in Haitink's recording that accompanied the Beyond The Score.

Indeed, especially since the keyboard does show the euro symbol, which is what you get with alt and 2!

We did have more of this: Discovering Music, when it was a 60 or 90 minute programme.

Is there a way of getting the degree symbol (as in 35 degrees)? Bizarre that it's not on the keyboard, given that the ~ is - who uses this who wouldn't also want a degrees symbol?

Back OT - sounds wonderful (and good to hear that De Waart is still going strong). There used to be Discovering Music programmes like this on R3 not long ago - a particularly good RVW #5: a complete performance "prepared" by Stephen Johnson and the orchestra - including the opening bars as they appeared in the composer's first sketches, with the pedal C a more straightforward tonic pedal (D). Excellent use of the BBC's resources - which is probably why they stopped it!

Option-shift-8 (option being the alt key).

Snap again! That RVW 5 is one that came to mind, fg. I also recall hearing "Night Ride and Sunrise" taken apart, and making sense to me for the first time.
