The final pages of Nielsen's Flute Concerto, as broadcast at the end of Performance on 3 tonight, sounded a bit strangulated from the right channel. I have just had a closer look and there was severe dynamic limiting applied to the right channel during the Beeb's recording of this performance, especially towards the end. Standards have clearly fallen rather low at the Radio 3 where recording standards are concerned. I intercepted the HD Sound stream to check what was going on since last weekends failure of the HD Sound stream, and though there was no clipping, and indeed, several dBs of headroom were left for the broadcast of the recording, the original recording was clearly handled very poorly. The engineer(s) concerned should be ashamed of their poor work on this occasion. Surely they did the usual level tests before the performance itself? Apparently not.
[Oh dear! What a horrendous typo that is in the thread title. I can do nothing about it. Perhaps frenchie or a moderator can correct "Mielsen's"?]
