It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

We cannot complain about a Lachenmann score being performed, certainly not by these forces, but it does raise the question why to take a piece which is more than a quarter of a century old.

Unfortunately unable to listen to it live as for work commitments

Because it's bloody good - and hasn't been performed in the UK before - and will demonstrate that Lachenmann entire back-catalogue is relevant and powerul, and he's not just wanted for his latest work - and to show that even conservative performers are "catching up" with what the rest of us have known for decades.

Has it not been in their repertoire? Rattle?

Mahler 2 or a TV documentary about Sir Si. This is the choice to be made.

Hmm. Which is more important? (Documentary only clashes with Radio 3, doesn't it? So doesn't really matter ...)

I'm going to have to tell my partner to go out for the evening so I can listen without interruption.

As the other concerts are at the Barbican, I'm not sure that Rattle and the BPO can claim to have been in residence at the Festival Hall (I think the marketing claims it as a 'London residency').
"I do not approve of anything that tampers with natural ignorance. Ignorance is like a delicate exotic fruit; touch it and the bloom is gone. The whole theory of modern education is radically unsound. Fortunately in England, at any rate, education produces no effect whatsoever. If it did, it would prove a serious danger to the upper classes, and probably lead to acts of violence in Grosvenor Square."

Am I going nuts or are they using the end of Mahler 5 for the trailer for this concert and the Sibelius (the latter's 5th is correctly used in the same trailer...)?
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

                        My misreading - I'm sure you're right.

Website says: 'close their London residency at the Royal Festival Hall ' which is ambiguous as it stands - I forgot about the Barbican concerts ...

Well they don't want to put most of the prospective audience off

Could be a lot worse: just imagine Kenny Dalgleish (we don't use her real name here) pronouncing the name "Lachenmann"!
