The trumpeter with glasses and (sort of) beard is a mate; and in the Mahler, check out the VIRTUOSIC tymp player Felix, who's the other one I know. I should have mentioned his playing up-thread, amazing flair and variety of sticks for different effects ... possibly to a fault, actually - the finale sometimes seemed like a concerto for tymps and orchestra (well the third movement is like a concerto for horn and orchestra, so hey....)

Thanks so much Calibs. The first piece was...well, Spanish-ish, but the Mahler excellent I thought. Not that I'm an expert. I'm always amazed by the sheer stamina of orchestral players. Medici TV is a bit of a discovery for me, so double thanks.

Cali, many thanks for letting us know this was on. The orchestra are quite something and the sound quality was very good. A wonderfully enjoyable performance with simply fabulous horn and trumpet playing.

Glad you and ardy enjoyed. Yes the first piece was forgettable.

Not a single split note that I could hear in either gig by either the principal trumpet or the solo horn player. Remarkable.

You can understand why the Mahler made such an impression on me live the other day.

Sadly the tympanist didn't really feature on camera in the transmission....

The Parisians got a much more fun encore than we did in London (just a repeat of the last movement from the first half, so forgettable that I didn't recognise it as such!).

The encore just now was a hoot, good sing-along for those not blowing anything, plus a nice bit of limelight for the maraca virtuoso

All I caught was the very end, by which I mean the rapturous reception and extended ovation. Yes, Caii, the encore was great fun.

The sheer joy on the faces of the orchestral players was great to see. The Dude really is something. The more I see of him the more I put my money on him to follow Simon in Berlln.

Anyway, I'm really looking forward to watching the whole concert later tonight (including, hopefully, more of an impression of the interior of the Philharmonie than was possible during the applause and the encore).

I didn't see Cali's alert until too late and joined it just as Part 1 was ending but, as with the BPO Digital Concert Hall I found a lot of problems with picture freeze and audio dropouts and gave up.

When it comes to the streaming of archive, as opposed to live, concerts there is never a problem so might try it.

My computer has been playing up for ages with a digital stutter but, for some reason completely beyond me, managed the streaming without a hiccup. I chose the mid not high quality stream, perhaps that's why - it sounded fine to me and looked good too.
