Yes, on BBC2; but it's available live on BBC TV Red Button (not available online).

OK, thanks for that! I notice Brian Large is not directing this year.

Depressing - but a good article.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

BBC2 show the second half live. The first part can only be seen on the red button.

Thanks for that clarification, LHC. No Suppé on 2 then.

When I enquired, Petroc reckoned that tickets for the prequel concert on NY's eve were only approximately 10% cheaper than for this one. I shan't start saving.

Not so long ago, in a land far away, we would listen to the New Years Day Concert and think, if we are not careful this is what R3 will become.....Wall to wall Musak. How right we were.

Looks like the TV budget has been cut this year...so far not one ballet sequence.

V good piece by Petroc. Doesn't detract from the spectacle of the event, if that's one's thing.

And on cue, here is the ballet.

Why depressing? Interesting, but I don't think it contains much that most of us didn't know already. It's also a reminder that most of the Nazi high command preferred this type of music to Hitler's beloved Wagner.

I found it a bit depressing, because I knew nothing about its origins - had never thought about it, really, and had no idea there were Nazi connections. I agree that it's interesting, though.

Did anyone hear the interval stuff on R3? A member of the VPO was being asked why there were only four women on the stage today, to which the reply was [and I won't try to transliterate an Austrian accent] "We don't want to change the character of the orchestra too much."

Must admit the women issue has never bothered me too much.

Doesn't approximately the same ratio apply to cathedral music directors?

Zubin now very much the elder statesman with performances to match; not much fizz this year but an affecting quiet authority. Only saw part two, will catch up later.
