A bit of a mixed bag, I thought. Was anyone listening and would like to comment?

I have only just got in this evening, I am afraid, VH. The concert has not reached iPlayer yet. I was looking forward to hearing it as (a) I like Chloe Hanslip and (b) up until now I have not heard Joseph Wolfe conduct and wanted to. I know he is the spitting image of his father (Sir Colin Davis) when he was young. He chose not to use his father's name to avoid the nepotism tag.

I listened to most of the concert. Bad tinnitus at the moment means I heard it through that, but the Dvorak Violin Concerto seemed to me to lack the lift that most of his music has and sounded extra Brahmsian, in spite of the undoubtedly good playing of Chloe Hanslip.
Chris, I had no idea that Joseph Wolfe was Colin's son. I must look out for him. I'll listen later on iPlayer to the remainder of the concert. Wow, with a dad like that, what an act to follow!

I'm most interested in your remarks about the Dvorak, Salymap, but I'm going to start at the beginning of what I described as "a bit of a mixed bag".............

Bartok: The strings gave a lively account of these dances; aided and abetted by the wind players who, according to the BBCs published schedule, should not have been there!

Dvorak: This is quite a heavyweight concerto and Miss Hanslip's thin and squeaky beginning lacked the bravura which sets the mood of this very fully scored work. There were some nice touches in the slow movement but I felt that Miss Hanslip was struggling throughout the Finale and my overall impression is that she is not yet ready for performance of works of depth such as this.

Piazzola: An entertaining piece, well orchestrated, but I felt that it belonged in a Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra Prom, rather than in a programme of Classical Masterworks.

Linz Symphony: Well, if the London Mozart Players can't play this work, who can? This was a sparkling account and a fitting end to what was an interesting assortment of works.

I hope that "Performance on 3" keeps its standards high throughout the week and does not tail off progressively from Monday to Friday, as has often been the case in the past.

I only caught the minuet onwards of symphony no.36. Erd it before.
What was the Bartok? And would have liked to hear Dvorak (busy evening yesterday!)

It would be good if they scrappped the second half of Po3 if its going to be them awful diabolical German songs. Again!!!

3VS The concert is on iPlayer now. I thought the Bartok Romanian Folk Dances were the best of what I've heard so far. You can always switch off before the 'diabolical' songs

LMP were fine last time I heard them, but that was live, with Harry.

Not the Romanian Folk Dances again, its all we seem to get by Bartok these days. How about the Divertimento for a change?
