    The Berlin Phil in 3D...

Concert conducted by Sir Simon Rattle will be shown in 140 UK cinemas as orchestras hope the technology will raise funds

I went to see the 3D film of Carmen from the Royal Opera House last week and they had a trailer for the BPO Mahler concert in 3D.

Frankly, it just looked bizarre. 3D works by providing a simulation of depth of field and can be quite successful in doing so. However, because it is a 'fake' people can end up looking like a set of cardboard cutouts in different planes.

Long shots of the orchestra in the hall were quite realistic, but close ups really did make all the orchestral musicians look like cardboard cut outs. Perspectives also seemed grossly exagerrated in close up shots, probably because of the wide angle lenses used on the cameras. Having a 3D Simon Rattle looming out of the screen was also an experience I'd rather not repeat.

The Carmen was better as a 3D experience, but was also afflicted by perspectives changing between shots and by the 'cardboard cut out' look, particularly where siome characters were very close to the camera.

The shots that worked best were the medium shots, which suggests to me that 3D might work best if a single camera was used from a fixed point in the front stalls - something I know some people prefer, but which I am usually against.

On the whole, I think alot more thought will have to be given to 3D presentations of opera, ballets and concerts before can be considered successful. At the moment it feels like a gimmick that doesn't really add anything.

The whole theory of modern education is radically unsound. Fortunately in England, at any rate, education produces no effect whatsoever. If it did, it would prove a serious danger to the upper classes, and probably lead to acts of violence in Grosvenor Square."

I've only ever seen trailers for 3D live action films, and noted exactly that effect - and have as a result not been remotely tempted to see one. I agree with you that at the moment, the technology is way under par, and seems no more than a gimmick. Remains to be seen if it takes off and develops properly. I have a hunch it won't. I have seen a couple of animated / CGI films in 3D and they were quite fun. But as a wearer of glasses, those 3D specs are a pain.

I suspect that 3D was (re)invented mainly for cartoon (or computer generated) films & 'action' films that seem to be designed to resemble computer games, & has been taken up by TV companies as a way of persuading people to buy new TVs, once the market for flat screen, plasma screen, wide screen, high definition etc has flagged. It's all designed to ensure that the economy 'grows' - ie people keep buying stuff.

& I certainly wont be coming soon to a cinema near me to see 3D.
