VW Sea Symphony BBCSSO/Manze- 14/7- Afternoon on 3

For anyone who did not catch it I thought that was an extraordinarily fine performance of the Sea Symphony on Afternoon on 3 today.

    Terrific soloists too .

Bravo - surely Hyperion or some such should be recording his cycle soon .

Agreed, a quite riveting performance of A Sea Symphony. It has also motivated me to retrieve an off-air video/DVD from the shelves of the South Bank Show, 1994, "RVW", in which director, Ken Russell, is guided by Ursula VW through the symphonies in 55mins, Charm and much enlightenment, hand-in-hand!

If you don't know it, do try to catch the Holst Choral Symphony from this afternoon too.

Manze's Prom of RVW Symphonies 4, 5 & 6 last year (? I've lost track!) was quite extraordinary. He has a great feeling for this rep. and I wondered if he might take up Hickox's legacy, or was that just a golden age? Perhaps he is. I look forward to hearing this broadcast.

He did a great Tallis Fantasia at the Bridgewater earlier this year. And last season he did a Sibelius 3 just a few weeks before the BBC Phil Storgards cycle - I know the latter has been much praised, not least on here, but for my money Manze was more convincing.

                      The Chandos recording?

I think the only VW symphony conducted by Manze not yet broadcast here is the 2nd. I look forward to that (and to a 1st in a rather less dry acoustic). As he's done (and broadcast) the 2nd with the Danish Radio SO quite recently I think it's on the cards.

I wish I could take up the mantle of messrs. Hickox and Handley!! This be one place where I would definetly delve into and pursue!

Heard this last night and as with the other RVW Symphonies Manze has conducted, he has certainly has a feel for these works! Hope he'll carry on this marvelous cycle! )
