Surely the occasion, by which I assume you mean the concert, rather than the anniversary, was created by the 'classical music minority mafia'? If you do mean the anniversary presumably the orchestra was invited to put on the concert by whoever it was that is organising commemorative events. Do you know that there weren't any others that would have suited your view of what was appropriate?

(I've just had a look - this BBC news item mentions other events - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-28062876)

I wouldn't advocate programming mediocre popular music (Ena on t'moor was a joke), but you've missed the point of this event which was not to celebrate the music played but to mix the nationalities of performing organisations (Vienna and Sarajevo) and, to some extent, of the composers. I just think it was a wasted opportunity to do this via the medium of a specialist music of limited appeal. I'd have preferred a more democratic musical event. But it's happened now, so it's too late to influence the organisers.

Flosshilde, thanks for your last post. Yes, reading your linked BBC news report there was also pretty much what I wanted there! I didn't know that - I'd heard only of the VPO concert. It's a pity that Alan Little didn't briefly mention the other commemorative events in Sarajevo. Perhaps he did and they were edited out, as he gave his interview the day before the concert.

By the way, by "occasion" I actually meant the event in response to the anniversary. I'd got the (wrong!) impression from Radio 3 that this concert was the only event, and I assumed from the R3 presentation of it that it was the official commemorative event organised by the Sarajevo city or Bosnian national authorities, (possibly with some international partners).

As you will know from the service licence, Radio 3's 'core proposition' is classical music. Perhaps it's just that you were listening to the wrong station?
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

The VPO does like its core repertoire, but its recorded legacy it wide.

Mehta once stamped his foot when rehearsing Bernstein's Candide Overture, shouting "Swing it!"
It was the first time the VPO been told to do that.

Hope they don't get too drunk in the winery ... :-)

Do they still have their own wine cellar in Vienna?

I have said it before, and I have no doubt that I shall have occasion to say it again:

                      BRAVO ALPIE!!!

FHG's congratulations seconded, tripled and quadrupled. A little masterpiece, Herr Doktor Alpensinfonie ( that's a virtual pint or 6 owed to you, not least for cheering me up). What we now need is a competition to see who should be given the honour of the first performance - how about, err ..... Sir Roger Norrington (HD flees for the surrounding Alps at this point)?

Yes, (if it's what you mean) that's what my 'joke' about the winery meant
