Magdalena Kozena dragged through a hedge backwards

Here is Magdalena Kozena adopting that 'dragged through a hedge backwards' look in this concert staging of Hab' mir's gelobt from Der Rosenkavalier. It must have been so easy for Lady Rattle to get ready for this concert by avoiding the slap and keeping that 'just got out of bed' look. I wonder who persuaded her to go along with this bright idea. Not Simon surely! Nevertheless its a splendid performance of the famous Rosenkavalier trio. I say all this in jest but being serious she is a most wonderful singer who I greatly admire.

Berliner Philharmoniker Simon Ratle, Magdalena Kozena, Camila Nylund, Laura Aikin, Dale Duesing

Does it matter what opera singers look like?

Clearly it does to other YouTube viewers judging by the erudite comments:

great boobs at 1:17 hot mama!

I think Magdalena looks fine. Wonderful music. Thanks for that clip, Ian.

Which one's MAgdelan Kozena? If She's the one in the short dress I assume that she's singing Octavian' & adopting a more 'boyish' look (eg the leggings/trousers).

What about SR's 'just got out of bed look', which he adopts for every concert? No comment on that?

Hiya Flosshilde, Yes Magdalena Kozena (Lady Rattle) is singing Octavian. Taste is a funny thing. I think she looks awful with that unkempt boyish look but others here seem not to bother. Diversity of opinions is one of the reasons why I love this forum.

... and the gurning ... and the "artistic" "moulding" of the tempo so that it breaks up the line ... and the skwarking singing. So much more to dislike than the singer's/singers' appearance(s).

Does anyone refer to Bernstein's 'gurning' I wonder?

Rattle's always strikes me as being the result of effortful involvement, Bernstein's of the reflection in the mirror.

                      Each to etc

Yes, but I feel you may be missing an essential difference here, ami, which is that I like Bernstein!

(Actually, I often greatly like Rattle's performances, too - three of the very best concerts I've ever attended were conducted by him - but of late in much Romantic repertoire I find that "effortful involvement" describes his idea of rubato and phrasing. Still - I doubt he loses much sleep over my opinion!)

That could be it, ferney - Rattle is a hero for me.

I listened to the extract with eyes closed and heard nothing untoward - except perhaps Marie Theres' last punch slightly pulled

Since I dislike 90% of Rosenkavalier and never listen to it I had to go to her website to see what she looks like. The “Prayer” CD cover reminded me forcefully of Stanley Baxter. Sorry to lower the tone.
