Here is Magdalena Kozena adopting that 'dragged through a hedge backwards' look in this concert staging of Hab' mir's gelobt from Der Rosenkavalier. It must have been so easy for Lady Rattle to get ready for this concert by avoiding the slap and keeping that 'just got out of bed' look. I wonder who persuaded her to go along with this bright idea. Not Simon surely! Nevertheless its a splendid performance of the famous Rosenkavalier trio. I say all this in jest but being serious she is a most wonderful singer who I greatly admire.

Does anyone refer to Bernstein's 'gurning' I wonder?
Rattle's always strikes me as being the result of effortful involvement, Bernstein's of the reflection in the mirror.
Each to etc

(Actually, I often greatly like Rattle's performances, too - three of the very best concerts I've ever attended were conducted by him - but of late in much Romantic repertoire I find that "effortful involvement" describes his idea of rubato and phrasing. Still - I doubt he loses much sleep over my opinion!)Numquam Satis!

I listened to the extract with eyes closed and heard nothing untoward - except perhaps Marie Theres' last punch slightly pulled
