Mahler 7: Live in Concert Sunday 27th April 7.30 LSO Gatti: Barbican

Would someone be willing to express a view on this concert, or on Mahler 7 in general, please? I thought the broadcast performance brought out Mahler’s counterpoint very clearly, with unrushed tempi (perhaps a little too unrushed, but I am probably wrong, given Gatti’s good reputation with Mahler). The finale was a disappointment (again): reading Deryck Cooke’s “Kapellmeistermusik” comment while listening probably didn’t help!

I heard most of it on the car radio and thought the performance well played but lacking a little in the frenetic (neurotic) excitement that I like in my Mahler - just a little too sane especially in the last movt. But i would have liked to have been in the hall all the same.

I've listened to the peformance twice, Lento. I agree with your view that the broadcast and Gatti's conducting brought out Mahler's counterpoint very well. That well-balanced clarity owed much to some fine playing by the LSO. I found some neurotic excitement with some scarifying "high wire" first violin work in one of the inner movements. I've commented recently on Gatti's lack of long term structural awareness ( Symphony in C , Stravinsky), I was less aware of those issues in this Mahler performance despite it being considered a difficult work to unify. I agree with your and gradus's strictures re the finale.

Not at all a bad job A-, perhaps, work to do but Daniele is showing a deal of promise. I'd have happily paid money to hear it in the Barbican were that Hall's acoustics not so dull. A lot of the transmitted "bloom" was due to good work by the (BBC?) engineers.

Thanks for your interesting comments. I was surprised when I looked in Radio Times and discovered the venue.

          Hello there,

I'm listening to the performance right now - and I would agree with Lento's comments about the performance being "too unrushed". There are some beautiful moments - but boy it feels SLOW

          Best Wishes,

          Tevot
