I'm going to make a point of hearing the (presumably) more extensive coverage of the 5 players' performances when broadcast on R3 this Thursday evening http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0435b2q

Each evening this week seems to be dedicated to the various finals which have already been featured (save the brass, this coming Friday) on BBC4 TV.

It will be especially interesting to be able to evaluate complete performances, audio only...
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Indeed...like the old FRCO exams where the examiners were behind a screen and the candidate was only identifiable by a number. So emoting at the console earned no Brownie points.

Oh that would be SUCH a great album title......
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

I am not a number, I am a free man.

I can't abide gurning whilst playing. I can think of some cellists who ought to perform behind a screen to avoid frightening the audience.

I am always more impressed by people who can sit still and play beautifully than by those who distract me from the actual sound with their antics. Marie-Claire Alain and Radu Lupu come to mind.

A couple of mind-boggling shots here:

I listened to all the strings last night too, and very enjoyable it was (even if the presenter tried the usual thing of putting words into the mouth of an 'expert'...to which the only reply is "Oh, absolutely"). I wonder if all the contestants were miked similarly? For instance the first player sounded very sweet but slightly distant, whereas the second (on the borrowed violin) sounded more 'present'. Was he just projecting more, or were they standing in different positions?

Anyway, fantastic to hear complete performances. Why not on the telly?

I have not been listening to the various finals at the time of broadcast this week, nor have I been following this thread. Can anyone advise whether it has been made clear why none of these finals has been made available via the Listen Again facility on the iPlayer. From Monday onwards, they all display the 'coming soon' legend.

Can't answer your question Bryn but the keyboard final IS on the iPlayer.

Either I am listening more carefully tonight, or what they playing is more exposed, or the standard of the playing isn't as good as it was in the other categories.

Yup, I thought the trumpet playing Lloyd [ last competitor] was more or less streets ahead.............

Only heard part but regrettably, agree - they did us few favours. There's an obvious rep shortfall but too much reliance on Paris Conservatoire test pieces do not an interesting recital make. (Nor do the "novelty" 'bone pieces of a bygone age.)
