I speak in my defense as well! I did say that I listen nearly every afternoon to the previous evening's Radio 3 concert! What occasioned my posting on this thread was my having heard two wonderful Bruckner symphonies in a week on Radio 3, followed by the fabulous acoustics and dynamics of the Amsterdam Concerthuis RCO-Janssons performance on the link which Petrushka kindly supplied. I am grateful to you for having originated this thread, and am an admirer of your love of and long history with excellent British orchestras, which I fully share!
    Dear Estelle,

Thank you for that message of explanation and I'm very sorry if I caused any offence. Threads get diverted from their actual subject so easily and of course, you were replying to a message which had no bearing whatever on the competence or otherwise of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, who get too few opportunities to display their merits on Radio 3.

It's good that more people are discovering the riches to be found in Dutch Radio 4 (and elsewhere on the Internet). I listened to the Jansons Bruckner 9 a few weeks ago and, after my initial, "It's quite fast" (that was by comparison with Haitink and the LSO), ended up being convinced by Jansons, especially in the third movement, where the sheer beauty of the orchestral playing was something I kept coming back to in my mental i-player.

Anyway, Karafan's hot tips on Austrian Radio's relays of VPO concerts should not be missed - and there is the Concertgebouw's own radio channel, although I've never quite mastered how to find out what is going to be played (there is among much treasure some superb Haitink Mahler which comes round from time to time). Plus various German stations, like MDR - and, nearer home, France Musique.

Although I suppose that there is as much chance of it as pigs flying, I live in hope that the BBC might create its own "Concert Hall" along Dutch lines where archive performances might be infiltrated into more current material.

Slightly more back on topic (the very talented Mr Karabits and his band), the recent CD of the Prokofiev 3rd and 7th symphonies is so good that I now actively look out for relays of their concerts on R3. While I agree that KK's Bruckner might be a work in progress (great that he's not scared of it, though), his Prokofiev is really rather fine. I hope that R3 continues to broadcast further symphonies as the cycle evolves.

        Herr Hornspieler,
Absolutely no offense taken, I assure you! The discussion came about because Petrushka was making a connection to another Bruckner performance, but neither one of us intended to derail this thread. By the way, I have six different recordings by the Bournemouth Symphony with five different conductors, including two with Kirill Karabits.

        Highland Dougie,
We are overwhelmed by such a cornucopia of choices for outstanding concert listening, thanks to the internet, radio, and television, not to mention CD and DVD. I find that listening on demand is such a wonderful privilege and convenience, don't you?

Sometimes the Bournemouth orchestra is hyped up, but over the years I would say that it has done some very worthwhile and good performances, as have other regional UK orchestras, and some of the regional orchestras have a much more interesting repertoire than the major UK and European orchestras often appear to put on.

                Absolutely. No criticism intended!
