After a series of deeply unsatisfactory evenings a few years ago, I decided to avoid any future concert conducted by Maazel, but with this programme and possibly my last chance to see Andy Smith in action, well, I'm risking the admission price... I'm hoping that, since he's expressed the desire to be kept on in some capacity, his retirement might be a bit like Maurice Murphy's multiple unsuccessful departures from the LSO. I recall him playing first trumpet with characteristic brilliance in a Proms Elgar 2 in his 70s...
