    Live in Concert 20.03.14 Philharmonia/Maazel - Strauss

Live from the Royal Festival Hall, London at 7.30 p.m.

For the 150th anniversary of Richard Strauss, Lorin Maazel conducts the Philharmonia in An Alpine Symphony and Also sprach Zarathustra.

    Strauss: An Alpine Symphony

    Philharmonia Orchestra
    conductor Lorin Maazel

For the 150th anniversary celebrations of Richard Strauss this year, the world-renowned conductor Lorin Maazel returns to London to conduct the Philharmonia in two orchestral masterpieces.
The Alpine Symphony recounts a mountain scene in detail from dawn to nightfall, imaginatively using an orchestra of over 150 players. Strauss's resonant opening to Also sprach Zarathustra may be best known thanks to Stanley Kubrick, but it is still an arresting start to a piece with searches for answers to Nietzsche's questions about God, humankind and our existence.

they are practising at Basingstoke tomorrow night, so it should be good to go next thursday.

I have tickets for the RFH, and am very much looking forward to it.

Have now checked the CFM schedule for the 20th:

Johann Strauss II: Voices of Spring Opus 410
Mariss Jansons conducts the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra

Ralph Vaughan Williams: Folk Songs of the Seasons – Suite
Martin Yates conducts the Royal Scottish National Orchestra

Antonio Vivaldi: Four Seasons Opus 8
              Violin: Sarah Chang
              Orpheus Chamber Orchestra

Frederick Delius: On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring
Thomas Beecham conducts the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra

Robert Schumann: Symphony No.1 in Bb major, Opus 38 ‘Spring’
Sir John Eliot Gardiner conducts the Orchestre Revolutionnaire et Romantique
All in nicely dynamically compressed audio. Just the thing for car or kitchen.

Hmm. Looks like the Dickie Strauss is the preferable option after all.

There's a good CD version of the Alpine with Maazel. The timing is a sensible 50:29. However, I've been informed that a recent performance of the same work with the same conductor took a staggering 64 minutes.

A search of my shelves reveals a Maazel recording with the Bavarian Radio SO. I will put on my liederhosen and give it a spin.
