oops. On further review, the Maazel that I have is of the Domestic Symphony, probably my least favorite Strauss tone poem. I was confusing Maazel with Andre Previn on Telarc, whose Alpine I am listening to as I type. The horns are braying, the gong just rattled my fillings, the climb begins....great stuff.

Maazel's Alpine is also with the BRSO.

I think it's about the noise they make when he walks...
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
          Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I used to sing in a chorus and I was frequently doused with a water hose to shut me up.

This being the Philharmonia we should get timps to die for at the opening of ASZ

Hopefully - but also perhaps for the last time...

After a series of deeply unsatisfactory evenings a few years ago, I decided to avoid any future concert conducted by Maazel, but with this programme and possibly my last chance to see Andy Smith in action, well, I'm risking the admission price... I'm hoping that, since he's expressed the desire to be kept on in some capacity, his retirement might be a bit like Maurice Murphy's multiple unsuccessful departures from the LSO. I recall him playing first trumpet with characteristic brilliance in a Proms Elgar 2 in his 70s...

I've only heard Maazel conducting live once and it remains in my top half dozen. Mind you, that was in the late 1960s...

Expansiveness is one thing, but this is quite different. I've heard this work so many times and have been thrilled on many occasions, but... Oh dear. this has to be the worst.

Not helped by the sound engineers.

The orchestra sounds a little unsettled to me, Alpie. No, the sound is not the best. Too distant off me.

The sound is very strange, but the tempi are ridiculous - it is almost standing still right now at the most glorious part of the ascent to the summit - grotesque!
He will kill the brass section by the time there are finished tonight - poor guys - I feel for them - but I won't listen to another note.

It really is getting slower and slower...

Time for the leader to start waggling his scroll, I think...
