I have just come back from three weeks in Italy and have gone onto Iplayer to catch up. Very sad to see the demise of the Saturday show. I used to look forward to Lucy on a Saturday and Catherine on a Sunday and the two shows made my weekend. I guess this is further dumbing down by the BBC. I guess something as specialised as Early Music is not appreciated at the BBC.
The channel is becoming more like Classic FM without the ads ie general music programs and celebrities harping on about their favorite music. Maybe I should be generous and say that maybe Mr Wrights' expensive tastes in hotels means they cannot afford the two shows anymore. I have heard that some in the BBC think 3 is too highbrow but my thinking is to foster enjoyment through exposure and from people learning new things rather than patronise people by saying "oh this is too difficult for them." I mean in my grandfather's generation many of the less fortunate self educated themselves in music via the BBC: what a shame :(. I always learn something from TEMS: the hearing of that beautiful Scarlatti motette yesterday was a pleasure and exposed me to music I would not otherwise have known about (the show a few months back on Zipoli also had me scouring the net for CDs).
I would complain but I have learnt now that complaints to the BBC about radio programs fall on deaf ears.
