I have just come back from three weeks in Italy and have gone onto Iplayer to catch up. Very sad to see the demise of the Saturday show. I used to look forward to Lucy on a Saturday and Catherine on a Sunday and the two shows made my weekend. I guess this is further dumbing down by the BBC. I guess something as specialised as Early Music is not appreciated at the BBC.

The channel is becoming more like Classic FM without the ads ie general music programs and celebrities harping on about their favorite music. Maybe I should be generous and say that maybe Mr Wrights' expensive tastes in hotels means they cannot afford the two shows anymore. I have heard that some in the BBC think 3 is too highbrow but my thinking is to foster enjoyment through exposure and from people learning new things rather than patronise people by saying "oh this is too difficult for them." I mean in my grandfather's generation many of the less fortunate self educated themselves in music via the BBC: what a shame :(. I always learn something from TEMS: the hearing of that beautiful Scarlatti motette yesterday was a pleasure and exposed me to music I would not otherwise have known about (the show a few months back on Zipoli also had me scouring the net for CDs).

I would complain but I have learnt now that complaints to the BBC about radio programs fall on deaf ears.

If you don't complain they can say that they have had no complaints - but a number of appreciative letters

A letter is harder to ignore - but you may in all likelihood get a reply from a lieutenant if you send it to Radio 3, whatever you send. Best to copy it to as many people as possible Judging from their Facebook page they're already getting a lot of flak for the film inundation.

Radio 3 does tend to go for saturation weeks. I did not mind the complete works of Bach as I think you can never get enough of the "old man" but the Schubert week and now this film stuff is a bit irritating. I can divine the response to my letter. It will be something like "dear sir, thanks for your letter, we appreciate viewer's comments, we have decided to limit the Early Show to one programme a week to free up space for other programmes etc".

I hope Lucy and Catherine take turns though as I enjoy both of them.

I'm afraid you might be right re "saturation weeks", and I -and I am sure many on these boards- share your opinion re the present film-music-rage.
But I'm also afraid that your remark regarding Bach compared to Schubert might open a can of worms....

Basically I think all saturation weeks are a bad idea. However I am against the dumbing down of the station with stuff like "essential classics" and those awful shows where celebrities pick their favourite music. I like the concerts and programmes where I can learn and discover new things and enjoy music that appeals to me, particularly choral and early music. I am also an organist and am amazed that "The Organist Entertains" has lasted over on 2. Nigel Ogden is a versatile musician and an accomplished classical organist as well as theatre so he does introduce classical pieces as well as jazz and theatre organ (which I don't mind anyway). But that programme is a rare beast. Anyway I am off topic now!
