I do rather like French Baroque too. Rameau, Lully and Couperin, are amo9ngst them but there's always the ones that do not get a mention?

... a phenomenon exemplified very neatly by your post, Bbm!
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Thank you MickyD. I am slightly reluctant to jump in though. Recently, I bought one of those CDs that were sold at a silly price by Amazon but was offered in their market place at a reasonable price. Well, no wonder. When it arrived, I found that the CD was there but nothing else, except the front and the back covers. It was the information about the work and the libretto I was really after, as the performance was on youtube, I was very disappointed. Is this a common practice? Or should I have guessed from the price? It is possible that the CD never had any text of any kind but I doubt it.

I am pretty certain that even a reissue on the old Auvidis label would contain some notes. But what exactly was the disc you bought on the market place, doversoul? If it was a budget disc originally, then it is possible that there were no notes. But if you believe that the notes were missing, then you should report it to the Amazon market place as not being a satisfactory product - and also put a comment on the seller's page warning others about the malpractice. Sellers usually take note when you post a message for the rest of the world to see!

Sorry everyone about this off-topic post. Just this one.

The CD is Alexandra Scarlatti’s cantata, Sedecia, Re Di Gerusalemme

It’s from Virgin Veritas. The seller’s description was ‘your CD will play correctly’. It did cross my mind that this was a way of saying that you’d only get the CD. The cover looks very much like the front and the back of a booklet from which the middle bit had been taken out but there are no signs of damage. So this may have been all there was. Ah well.

Doversoul - seeing that this was a first recording from Virgin Veritas, I would be amazed that there weren't any notes supplied originally. I must admit that I had never heard of this work, but there have been such a torrent of early music releases in the last 25 years or so that it has been difficult to keep up with them all!

On the subject of superb Lully discs, I have been catching up with last weekend's EMS on the former Signor Lulli.... and was hugely impressed by the extracts from this disc:

The first track was played and is totally enchanting.

                I've ordered the disc...

If you fancy seeing a Lully opera to the utmost HIP criteria, try this stunning DVD from Alpha, featuring Vincent Dumestre's "Le Poème Harmonique"....it really conjures up the candelit theatre atmosphere:

The same forces have also performed (for the same label) Molière's "Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme" with music by Charpentier.

Extracts can be found on YouTube. Give them a try - you really can almost smell the greasepaint!

Mine arrived today, and has just had a spin - I think it's exquisite. Perfect balm for the mind and soul after a rather manic day

Presto Classical has it at £19.31 (P&P £1.50, I think)

Oops, sorry folks, my mistake - "Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme" of course features music by Lully, not Charpentier as I said in my earlier post (I was thinking of "Le Malade Imaginaire"). Anyway, get hold of those two Alpha DVDs, they are truly wonderful.

I ordered the Lully cd - can't go wrong at £3-99 from the grocer's !

I have also been dipping into Lully's Grand Motets on Naxos - lots more exquisite music beautifully performed from what I have heard to date.
