    Frescobaldi. and A Royal Wedding

    Saturday
Lucie Skeaping explores the wedding of Princess Elizabeth Stuart and Frederick V, Elector Palatine, which took place in Whitehall 400 years ago this Valentine's Day. The celebrations were organised by Sir Francis Bacon, and included over a week of lavish entertainments including music by, among others Robert Johnson, Orlando Gibbons, Thomas Campion and John Coperario, their contributions heard alongside popular ballads, catches and toe-tapping dance tunes with John Donne waxing lyrical: 'Since thou dost this day in new glory shine, may all men date Records from this thy Valentine'

An honourably guest: Sir Hubert Parry

    Sunday
Catherine Bott and harpsichordist Fabio Bonizzoni, probe the celebrated Toccatas and Partitas for keyboard by the highly influential late renaissance composer, Girolamo Frescobaldi.
Fabio Bonizzoni has recently recorded the Toccatas and Partitas on disc, to great acclaim. In his opinion these are Frescobaldi's masterpieces, a series of pictures in music. "Each piece", says Bonizzoni, "paints a sentiment." […]

The 'Royal Wedding' one was given a trail on Saturday Breakfast and amongst a few obligatory staples (Ravel's Bolero, etc, etc) Gibbons Go from my Window by The Rose Consort was played as a sort of encouragement.

      Frescobaldi

      Dear Catherine
That was a fabulous programme. Especially, as you said on the programme, the track 7: Toccata terza (per l’organo de sonarsi alla levatione), and the questions you asked were just the kind I would have loved to ask.

I had been looking for Frescobaldi (‘s CD) for quite some time but had not been able to make up my mind. I have now (do you get a commission?)

I very much enjoyed the Saturday EMS and the examples played. Once again I was impressed by the Tomkins from Sidney Sussex.

On Sunday the Frescobaldi programme certainly lived up to the best of EMS traditions. But I have a fearful admission to make. Whilst acknowledging F as a seminal figure in the development of a truly idiomatic keyboard style, I frankly find listening to more than a couple of minutes' worth....boring.

He lands on a chord and twiddles away with rushing scale patterns for a while, then moves on to another chord and ditto; and I find such harmonic progressions as there are a bit unsatisfactory.

Even Ms Bott's enthusiasm did not shake me out of my probably irrational prejudices.
