I have Jordi Savall's L'Orfeo DVD from Opus Arte, which is excellent. I too would like to explore Monteverdi's operas further. To start with Poppea seems like a good idea. This DVD by William Christie and Les Arts Florissants seems like a steal (£8.44 on Amazon) for an introduction, although there are a few negative reviews.

I won’t stop you buying the DVD but I’ve just found this. You could see it yourself before buying it.
Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

It is really wonderful that we are able to see complete operas/concerts on YouTube, but it amazes me that there are no problems regarding copyright. I notice that the Savall "Orfeo" was taken off air from a French cable arts station...is this different to someone posting the performance off a DVD?

The short answer is that there is almost certainly a breach of copyright taking place. However, YouTube does not itself monitor its site for copyright infroingements. Instead, it only acts when it receives a removal request or otherwise becomes aware that a video or any part of a video on its site infringes the copyrights of a third party.

My advice is to keep quiet and enjoy these goodies while you can!

A set of parts for a certain French ballet suite arrives without a proper score (only a 'piano-conductor') for use with a certain orchestra.

A miniature score is ordered from a certain online supplier of everything..

A certain person takes it to a certain copy shop.

An A4 sized copy is produced for the ludicrously small sum of £5 including stapling.

Has a certain person infringed copyright, and ought the said person to keep quiet?

Just in case anybody has, like me , been looking for a complete " Poppea" with English subtitles........

                here is a Harnoncourt version.

you need to click the " Captions" button on the screen and select English. (or one of several other languages if that is your thing).

I see it has been deleted. I am sorry to have disappointed you. There are a few short clips of the production but they may not be of much help/interest.

I don't think so, ardy (and I certainly hope not - somebody I know has been photocopying some mini-scores to A4 simply in order to see the notes for years). As I understand it, as long as the original M/S was legally bought, (and not borrowed from a library or a friend) the purchaser can do what they like with it - as long as you don't then try to publish and/or profit from any copies made.

No - if they copy it & give the copy to a friend (or any one else) they'd be infringing copyright. It's probably OK if you make the copy for your own use, but copyright legislation is very strict.

                              Oh ****!! I shan’t be here.

[ed] I've deleted the rest of my original post, as it was about Poppea.

For me the recitatives are often the most moving parts - whether in Bach cantatas, Lully or Mozart operas. They can have a directness which is very effective, and the subtleties of changes in time-signatures in Lully can be lovely...
