    Baroque Spring

I heard a brief mention of this on "In Tune" a few nights ago: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p012fwtk/features/about

Something to look forward to when the light returns to our World.

Thank you for the link. This gives me a slight sinking feeling but a special event on Baroque music can’t be a bad thing.

The concerts will be presented by Radio 3’s Katie Derham, who will be joined by the Antique Roadshow’s Lars Tharp during the intervals to offer a fascinating insight into the baroque story of each house.

Hmm: gulg, gulg. I know what you mean. At least Lars Tharp can be entertaining, but Katie Derham I can do without. Let's hope for a few gems.

        I’ve just found this…mmm…

        Baroque Remix Workshop
The five shortlisted composers for the Baroque Remixed Talent Search hear their entries played by the BBC Concert Orchestra at the BBC Maida Vale studios.

Taking part in the video are composers Alice Trueman, Joshan Mahmud, Anne-Marie O'Farrell, Rupert Jeffcoat and Marisa Hartanto; conductor Charles Hazlewood, violinist Charles Mutter, Oscar-winning composer Anne Dudley and the BBC Concert Orchestra's General Manager, Andrew Connolly.

The five shortlisted composers hear their entries played by the BBC Concert Orchestra.

I’d have thought there is more than enough music to get to know before doing anything new to it. Ah, well. We’ll see.

I've just seen this in the latest National Trust magazine. My heart sinks a little too, but one thing's for sure - it's a nice little number for Ms Derham!

The R3 site says this -

Baroque Remixed - Lauren Laverne presents Baroque music remixed by Will Gregory from Goldfrapp and finalists of the Baroque Remixed talent search with the BBC Concert Orchestra, live from London's Roundhouse at 7.30pm on 11 March.

              and also has this -

Baroque-around-the-clock - Radio 3 presents a day of Baroque-themed comedy and music for Red Nose Day on 15 March.

              Yes; two must-hear programmes

(perhaps someone could start a thread of baroque-themed jokes? My powers of invention aren't quite strong enough at the moment)

I wonder whether anyone will ask whether ‘baroque’ is an appropriate label for music at all, as opposed to architecture and the visual arts. (Does anyone talk of ‘baroque literature’?)

But the important thing is that a label = a theme, and hey presto, you can have a day, a week, a month, a year …. devoted to it, re-mixes, red noses and all.

It would be rather good if it involved a lot of Buxtehude, Böhm, Sweelinck, Titelouze, Marchand and perhaps even some Scheidt. But I suspect it means wall-to-wall Vivaldi. :(

There are loads of Baroque composers under-represented on daytime R3, except on the Early Music Show; they show up a lot on TTN: many interesting Bohemians.

I've never heard of Titelouze and Marchand, so will investigate.

Any other lesser-known names members could post about?

I do hope the Baroque Spring is not going to be dominated by the BBC Springers.
This afternoon we had choral offerings by the Blow/Purcell generation...and KD said they were also going to be on The Choir today.

Well I enjoyed the concert from The Vyne very much, BBC Singers, Ms Derham, Lars Tharp and all.

Not hugely, though it was good to hear the anthems done with strings. I don't want to start, in this civilised place, the sort of polemic which characterises The Choir Forum.
I'll just say that for me The BBCS are not the group I'd choose to recreate the sounds which might have emanated from The Abbey, St Paul's and The Chapels Royal in Restoration times. (There was a very agreeable bass/baritone this pm though. A latterday John Gostling, perhaps.)
