Andrew talks to Alexandra Coghlan about a new batch of choral discs including Monteverdi's Selva morale e spiritual, motets by Giovanni Croce, and madrigals by Cipriano de Rore.

    This looks promising.

Liked this a lot. The choir sound so different to most English choirs - don't know how they do it. Very different to the superb relaxed confidence of William Christie.

I don't think this thread has mentioned the recording featured in the first part of RR on 25/11/17 (just catching up having been abroad):
JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH: Magnificat in D Major, BWV 243

GEORGE FRIDERIC HANDEL: Dixit Dominus, HWV 232

Vox Luminis (choir), Lionel Meunier (conductor)

          Alpha Classics ALPHA 370 (CD)

It sounded to me really exceptional, (infinitely preferable to the 'frankly risible' JEG Magnificat commented on above) - going to give it some serious listening. In fact, I'm doing so now (thank you, Qobuz).

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
          Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I heard a short extract of this on France Musique yesterday and was similarly impressed.

The HD stream on my main hifi made me think that the small group of voices sound quite 'small' and far away in comparison with the instrumental sound - maybe just a question of adjusting after being used to a more 'choral' balance... Need to listen further. Would be interested in others' comments if anyone gives it a good listen...

A pity it's not a new release from Sophie Yates, her discs are always a joy.

I thoroughly enjoyed this slot. Hannah French’s style almost suits the usually tiresome conversation form. And in my most absolutely humble opinion after hearing the new alto alto duetti (or alti duets?) CD, Jaroussky is in a class of his own.

Hmmm - she was forced rather to rattle off her comments in a Serviceable way (at one point ironically describing a piece as "calm and soothing" whilst speaking twenty-seven-to-the-dozen). And a couple of irritating "I just want to enthuse about .... " "Indeed, but we're not going to listen to that, instead ... " moments reminiscent of SK's "We've received all these suggestions" [rattles off half-a-dozen names of tweeters and suggested works] "but I've chosen to play the Hoe-Down by Copland, instead".

Damn. They've just faded it out on Record Review. Maybe it would be a candidate for another EMS with David Skineer.

A bit about the contrafactum here:
