3 yrs ago was guided round the magnificent and opulent Avila Cathedral by the church's own guide. Guide was asked about both Morales and Victoria. Guide had heard of neither. Tells you all you need to know about the Catholic Church in Spain's current attitude to its own musical tradition. All the time we walked round, on the p.a. system, a quiet track of a choir singing Palestrina Aeterna Christi Munera. Erm.....[a] Palestrina, lovely but why in Avila given the riches of their indigenous tradition? and, oh yes, [b] the choir on the track? Westminster Cathedral.

Lacock was honoured to lead the quatercentenary tributes to Spain’s greatest composer Tomás Luis de Victoria in his native city of Ávila in August 2011. El Festival de Música Abulense, a Lacock initiative in cooperation with Caja de Ávila, brought together sixty-six singers from fifteen countries to perform Victoria’s monumental Mass Laetatus Sum in Ávila cathedral on the exact anniversary of his death. The singers were joined by the four sackbuts of Il Nuovo Chiaroscuro and the conductor was Carlos Aransay.

Delighted to see it. Might be a little interesting to know whether the Lacock application to run the course in Avila came before Avila's own awareness that there might be a course in the anniversary!!

Anyone hear the announcement of which Renaissance piece & performers was used to fill in around 6pm before the Swedish segment of the day's broadcasts started?

It was beautifully performed, I'd love to know what it was, no listing of it (yet) on the website...

I heard a bit of that later.. No, it was something else, a very pro choral outfit... Sounded like Tenebrae or a gang like that...

Earlier (just before 3 p.m.) they used a recording of the same Danish choir (Ars Nova Vocal Ensemble, directed by Paul Hillier) as had just done the live concert, singing part of a Tallis Mass.

From iPlayer it was the Sanctus and Benedictus from the same Mass setting used earlier, with the same choir.
