Alfred Deller Centenary

Catherine Bott presents a programme to celebrate the centenary of the birth of the pioneering countertenor, Alfred Deller, who was born May 31st 1912. Catherine is joined in the studio by 3 countertenors, James Bowman, Robin Blaze and Alfred's son Mark, to discuss some of the many facets of Alfred's art. They play a selection of Alfred's many recordings dating from the 1950s, including some from the early days of Alfred's Deller Consort, one of his most important contributions to the early music movement. Catherine and Mark also chat about Stour Music, the Festival which Alfred founded and which celebrates its 50th anniversary this June. Music in the programme includes lute songs by Dowland and Campion, a scene from Handel's opera Orlando, and the 50 year old recording of father and son, Alfred and Mark, singing Purcell's Sound the Trumpet.

I really enjoyed the show though, Catherine Bott chairing with her usual skill. Deller really was unique. He had some strange mannerisms, especially that one of going quiet as he went up to a high note, but his voice quality, accurate placing of notes and sheer musicianship were undoubted. All 3 studio guests paid very handsome tribute to him and chose a representative cross-section of his work to be played.

Me too!! But as it's part of the title (EMS) I go along with it. Luckily, use of the word 'show' is about the only attempt at what could be called 'dumbing down'. The show...sorry, programme....maintains R3's best standards. It's informative but without too much chat. I hope the fact that we on The Forum like it soesn't mean the producers will start mucking about with it!

I had sufficiently recovered from the effect of listening to yesterday's Alfred Deller programme, and enjoyed L'Estravagante’s concert today. No great discovery but an hour of Corelli and Vivaldi is always very welcome.

I bought that LP when it first came out, along with the Shakespeare songs one, and I saw it reissued as a CD when I was in Poland in the 90s.

Both definitely worth getting hold of if you can, IMO.
