    Buxtehude and Bach on TTN

    Tuesday 4th

Jonathan Swain presents a selection of Buxtehude and Bach recorded at the Rheinvokal Festival

I may not rush out to buy a CD of these singers but that's irrelevant. Why can’t this be TTD?

    Quite. It's a lovely programme.

Dont know about the singers, but Café Zimmermann are one of my favourite 'baroque' ensembles. If you've not already, do try their Bach series on Alpha :).

      Café Zimmermann

The latest addition to my favourite, too. (no not quite since yesterday) There was a programme that featured Café Zimmermann not long ago. I was most impressed.

alpha are bringing out later this month a box set of the 6 CDs of the cafe Zimmermann Bach multiple instrument concertos.
A reasonable price on amazon.uk - cheaper and sooner on amazon.fr - even cheaper than that on amazon.de

        Much recommended!

I have the individual CDs, collected when issued, vinteuil. Strongly second the much recommended; like hearing the music for the first time.

Seconded vinrouge & John Skelton!! I don't have them all, but was gazing on the alpha display in HMV on the way home last night...
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
            Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Thanks for flagging this up, Vinteuil - I've been tempted by these single CDs for a while.

The Alpha catalogue is full of some unusual and fascinating things - I would also recommend their collection "Les Chants de la Terre" - really fascinating recordings of ancient songs and dances, mainly from France and performed most hauntingly by Le Poème Harmonique and Vincent Dumestre.

The Buxtehude and Bach was repeated this Monday morning, ft. Café Zimmerman: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01nj7gk

Other Buxtehude discoveries I made on the back of this wonderful performance, esp. Buxwv50 'Ich suchte des Nachts' (nice to hear a soprano singing in this duet for once!)was this album of Buxtehude cantatas:

It's OOP but available on Spotify: spotify:album:4d4GPt1ndXj6Jd14KEEfjX

Some lovely singing and includes a gorgeous 'klaglied' (BuxWV 76/2) at the end of the album.
