Yes, that last disc is a gem, especially for the César Franck, beautifully done.

Why? Instrument-building technology continues to change with each passing year. The concerto was composed in 1868, anyway.

The Grieg discussion reminded me that there was a review in the Guardian of a period instrument Stravinsky recording - the link I posted - which set off a train of thought from my experiences. Family involvement over several decades in the baroque HIPP world means I tend to think of it as applying to something from a long time ago; the Grieg moves it a lot closer but Stravinsky moves it into the 20th century and much closer to my lifetime, hence my age perception.

Back in 1994, Mode Records issued a recording of John Cage's Sonatas and Interludes of 1948, played by Philipp Vandré. A big thing was made of its being the first recording to use a Steinway model "O", which was the model used by Cage when he made his table of measurements for the preparations. Now that's what I call an original instrument performance. However, the preparations Cage used were, if I recall correctly, in the possession of Margaret Leng Tan by the time of the recording, so not that close to the original instrument as prepared by Cage.

This is again going off thread a little, but as we were talking about early pianos, I thought I'd mention that I've just acquired this CD from MDG a little while ago. Jorg Demus in a 1984 recording, which I believe has never seen the light of day on CD before. Schumann's Fantasiestucke Op.12 and Humoreske Op.20 on an 1835 Graf - which in addition to the three normal pedals of that time, the soft, the harpstop and the damper, there is a fourth rather uncommon one, the lutepedal. This is similar to the one on the harpsichord. I still long for DHM to reissue their Demus/Schumann recordings of him playing on early pianos, but this is a welcome addition to the catalogue.

From time to time Through the Night includes an item by Ronald Brautigam on an Erard. As there's no audience I guess it's a studio performance from Netherlands Radio. I haven't heard the Grieg from him in these, and am not sure whether what has been broadcast included concerti or only solo works - it's a while since I have heard one.

I have to say that for me this recording doesn't have that lovely bloom and ambiance that were so much part of the charm of the earlier Demus Schumann recordings on DHM.

Ah, I had assumed that these were re-issues, possibly under licence, of those DHM recordings. When were these MDG recordings made?

Sadly not, this one was made in 1984; for some inexplicable reason, never issued until now. The disc opens well, but then I find the playing and recording rather harsh at times. Certainly nowhere near the magical quality of the DHM recordings.
