    René Clemencic

I hadn't realised that René Clemencic had recently died.

Austrian radio's Ö1's excellent "Alte Musik - neu interpretiert" had a tribute on the 16th of March - it's available to hear until this evening.
präsentiert von Colin Mason. Am vergangenen Dienstag ist der österreichische Komponist, Musiker und Musikwissenschafter René Clemencic im Alter von 94 Jahren gestorben. Der Cembalist, Blockflötist ...

(Alternatively, here's a link to the MP3 stream.)

The presenter is Colin Mason - I think he used to be in The King’s Singers. (He speaks slowly and clearly enough for my schoolboy German to struggle along.)

Here is an earlier biography http://www.clemencic.at/en/biography.html

I have LPs of his Cantigas de Santa Maria which I much enjoyed.

I don’t know if they’ve ever been released on CD - though some YouTube videos are available.

Thanks so much for this link. I had also not heard he had died. This multi-talented and prolific musician and early music pioneer has been around as long as I have been listening to classical music - since the 1960s. I remember well-priced LPs on Supraphon and Vanguard (eg Christmas collection with Alfred Deller.)

I've just listened to and greatly enjoyed the programme with its beautifully played and diverse playlist selection. I loved the monk's song from Eberhard Kummer with a strong Austrian lilt. Excellent spoken German in the commentary from Colin Mason. I checked him out here.

He was certainly someone with very wide ranging musical interests - his own compositions are in what might be described as an eclectic modernist style and show (as you'd expect from his work in early music) a great sensitivity and imagination for timbre.

A great favourite of mine, especially in medieval music, I appreciate his work as director of the Clemencic consort, and as instrumentalist.

But most of all I value him because he introduced me to one of the singers who means the most to me, whose style appeals to me most. That singer is René Zosso.

His Machaut recording, with the mass and lots of other things, is for me a joy to hear. There is no Machaut recording I like more. His recordings of Troubadour music are an endless source of fun. His interpretations of medieval tablatures on clavichord and other (often exotic, rare) instruments are fascinating and often challenging (in a good way.)

Ah yes, Eberhard Kummer’s another good one! I didn’t remember he worked with Clemencic. He’s my favourite Wolkenstein!
