Molière and Charpentier EMS Sunday 16th

Following his very public rift with long-term contributor Jean-Baptiste Lully, Molière turned to Marc-Antoine Charpentier to provide the incidental music for his last theatrical productions.

As part of Radio 3's celebration of Molière's quatercentenary, Lucie Skeaping explores the music Charpentier composed for Molière's final theatre pieces, including the plays Le Malade imaginaire and Le Mariage forcé.

This programme includes brand new recordings by Radio 3's recently inaugurated New Generation Baroque Ensemble - the aptly named Ensemble Molière.

Molière is one of those figures to whom many pithy(and often derogatory) remarks are attributed. There was one such on Sunday Morning today (about other playwrights) but I can't find it online. However here are some more rather typical offerings:

Discover Moliere famous and rare quotes. Share Moliere quotations about literature, love and virtue. "I assure you, an educated fool is more..."

This is a rather nice collection of some of the lesser-known theatre music by Charpentier, available at budget price.

William Christie's recording of the musical scenes from Le Malade Imaginaire is very nicely done too, although it made me want to hear them in the context of the whole play.

I'd forgotten that one, it's lurking on my shelves somewhere. Yes, it has a real sense of theatre about it ..that wonderful dialogue between one of the actors and the violins. William Christie himself even gets a line or two, in Latin if I remember correctly! Great stuff.

I quite liked the following two:

"You only die once, but you will be dead for a very long time."

"Of all the noises known to man, opera is the most expensive."
