She: "No, that would go against my religion"
He: "What religion would that be?"
She: "Not trapping wild animals".

Which must be wretched for the whole clan. I just wonder how much / if any damage BEHIND the adulation has been done to that family in this tip into public scrutiny?

The human race likes to have heroes. Sports personalities, pop stars, monarchs, war heroes, presidents, DJs. Often the adulation is over-egged, usually by the media, and envy rears its ugly head. Sir Tom never set out to be famous. Others saw to it that he was. Human viciousness followed.
Social media platforms need to be monitored more to combat trolling. Facebook makes astronomical profits, but relies on a relatively small number of people to sort out mischief.

From my experience of a several years moderating a family history website I came to the conclusion that the internet has allowed the true amount of significant mental illness to be apparent to a much wider audience. I suspect in the past newspaper editors got the then equivalent of this sort of nasty message and merely filed it whereas today it can be seen by a good number before a moderator deletes it - in a couple of cases I've seen schizoid behaviour in which a single troll sets up 2 anonymous accounts that debate between themselves totally deranging any thread. Luckily most of these sick idiots have moved to twitter and away from web sites.
