Viol consort and R3 regulars Fretwork are scheduled to appear at the International London Early Music Festival. Their programme concludes with a recent composition by John Paul Jones, yes THAT John Paul Jones, the multi talented Led Zeppelin founding member and bassist It’s a piece called The Tudor Pull.
Arguably one of the most of influential rock bass players of all time who never really received the full credit due to him for a lot of the original compositions on the Zeppelin albums, examples being 'How Many More Times' from Led Zeppelin (1969), 'The Rain Song' from Houses of the Holy (1973), 'In the Light' from Physical Graffit (1975). Still going strong at 74, too. Recent work includes sessions on a couple of Foo Fighters tracks, a rock classic album with Them Crooked Vultures (2009) - the track that got all the airplay was 'Bandoliers'. And, I didn’t know this, an onstage appearance at ROH in Anna Nicole (2011), the Turnage opera about the Playboy model Anna Nicole Smith.
Not the first classic rock musician to cross the bridge into early music. There’s been Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore. Ian Anderson is another example. There are probably many more.
So, that’s Fretwork at the London International Festival of Early Music on Thursday 5 November 2020, 7pm. Ticket donations invited, should you fell so moved. Could be good. Don't suppose there'll be many bonfires this year
