    Kenneth Gilbert RIP

I'm not sure if anyone has already mentioned this, but today I learned of Kenneth Gilbert's passing on 16th April at the age of 88.

Another student of Nadia Boulanger and to me one of the finest harpsichordists. His recordings of Bach keyboard works on the Archiv label are the ones to which I always turn.

    That is sad news.

Gilbert was a quite wonderful player. His recording of the JS Bach 'The Well-Tempered Clavier' on harpsichord for Archiv Produktion is sublime.

Agreed, even if the Clavier was more "equal" than "well"-tempered in his case. A sad, if not that early, loss to the world of music and beyond. Love the HIPP spelling of "harpsicord".

Some amazing Gilbert bargains to be had on Amazon...if you have a thousand quid or two burning holes in your pockets

Sad to see how few of his recordings appear to be still in the standard catalogues. Sad and surprising to me also, the difficulty I'm having finding any on my own shelves. Such a familiar name

EDIT Ah, the LP racks have revealed his Goldbergs (Harmonia Mundi).

I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

Archiv did gather all of his Bach keyboard recordings into a handy 10 CD bargain box set some time ago, but sadly even that now seems unavailable.

Surprised to see his Bach Keyboard box (DG Collectors's edition) is now download only fro Presto Classical, and nowhere to be seen on amazon.co.uk. A fair number of his recording in the DG big Bach box, however, though I see that is now hard to come by. Glad I got mine for amazon.fr 18 months ago.

£20.35 including p&p (new) from amazon.co.uk when I got it somewhat under 4 years ago. I will have to check whether all its contents are also in the Bach 333 box (currently available from Europadisc for £331.16). If so, my 10 disc set may become available.

Here's an obit from The Gramophone...most informative about his life and achievements:

Many of his classic Archiv recordings are available on YouTube. Sound-quality not great on some.

Thanks for the obituary, very interesting. I would also highly recommend seeking out Gilbert's vintage disc of Froberger on Archiv and the Purcell suites on Harmonia Mundi.

Thank you for finding the obituary. I'm not sure that I'd even taken in that he was Canadian - Canada has produced some great keyboard players! - now listening to his Art of Fugue. A loss to music.

This DVD is still available - a fascinating master class with Gilbert and the young Olivier Baumont shot in 1990. In French, but with English subtitles.
