St John Passion ends Record Review

A lovely performance of Bach's St John ends today's record review. IMO Herreweghe has really 'got it', Some modern groups take Ruht Wohl far too fast. It is, after all, a 'rest in peace' chorus.

Ruht Wohl was lovely, as you say, but what about all those pauses at the end of each line of the final chorale? This now sounds odd, having become used to performances which take a breath rather than pause.

Yes, they were definitely valuing some older practices. We were told that the fermata in Bach's urtext was used merely to indicate the ends of lines; but who knows? I notice BTW that the Netherlands Bach Society has re-instated the detached perfect cadence at the ends of recitatives.

A cracking performance from 2014 by Concerto Copenhagen, Julien Pregardien, and the Latvian Radio Singers is still available as an online video from Latvian TV (music starts after 5 minutes - requires disabling adblockers).
