          I was simply alluding to the 'rule' that the "sh" pronunciation does not apply if the following vowel is "a", as in "Scarlatti", rather than "e" or "i".

            Ah, yes - that was made clear in the two links I provided, but neglected to mention in my post, even though I illustrated it with Scarlatti.

              Yes, the question mark following "Scarlatti" was open to ambiguous interpretation. It could be seen as questioning "why not", rather than as an illustration.
